The Versio Sweater – beginnings

I’m not a sweater knitter. I’m a shawl knitter.
I was a sock knitter for awhile.
I’ve knit some mittens. And some hats.
I knit a bag once. And a blanket.
Some stuffed animals. And a pair of slippers.

But I don’t really knit sweaters.
I’ve finished a total of 5.
I felted one.
And one needs a dropped stitch tacked down.
And one I might over dye.

So I have 3 that are wearable (one of which has a date with the dye pot.)
And one that has about 10 minutes of work on it.

But I started another one last week.
Which brings me up to 5 sweaters on the needles.
(I’m not quite sure how that happened…)

The pattern is Versio by Ankestrick (here it is on Ravelry.) It’s a top down pullover, with continuous set in long sleeves (which are kind of totally brilliant!), and I’ll be adding the hood that Rililie on Ravelry wrote out.

I chose it to fill the role of a sweatshirt in my self-made wardrobe. I wanted something light but warm, that would be easy to wear, but not boring to knit.

I’m holding two strands of lace weight yarn together (the pattern calls for one strand of lace weight) on a size US 8 (5.0 mm) needle.

knitting

I’m using 1 skein of Julie Asselin’s “Merletto,” 1 skein of Sweet Georgia’s “Merino Silk Lace,” 1 skein of Fiberspates’ “Scrumptious,” and 1 skein of Cascade’s “Forest Hills.”

knitting

I’m hoping most of 1 skein of each will be a enough. Everything (except the Cascade), is from some swatching I was doing for my LYS, so I have one almost full skein of each.

I’m beginning to have my doubts that this will be enough yarn on it’s own. If it’s not,  I’m planning on doing the lower portions of the body and sleeve in the solid black Cascade.

I’m at the waist now and zooming towards the hem, while still trying to work out how I ended up with *5* sweaters on my needles…

(please tell me I’m not the only one who finds it amusing that I have the same number of sweater WIPs as I do FOs.)

I’m knitting again!

I’m knitting!!!

knit swatch

Sure, it’s not a lot of knitting, but it’s something. And after weeks of no knitting – it feels amazing! I’m swatching for a new sweater, Versio, by Ankestrick Designs, in three lace weight yarns, Fiber Space’s ‘Scrumptious,’ Sweet Georgia’s ‘Merino Lace,’ and Julie Aselin’s ‘Merletto.’
Getting gauge is proving challenging (mostly because I’m holding two strands together, instead of just one) and I’m very close to saying “fuck it” and reworking the pattern to make it work with my gauge, but I have one more swatch on the needles that may give me the correct gauge. Fingers crossed.

handspun yarn singles

I’ve also done some spinning. I pulled out the 100% alpaca that I started spinning 3 (!) weeks ago. Spinning a little here, and a little there. Mostly when I haven’t felt like futzing with getting gauge on my sweater.

The apartment is sloooooooowly coming back together, I’m hoping to get the sewing machine set up soon, so I can start sewing again for The Self-Made Wardrobe project.

Speaking of which,

the self-made wardrobe

I “officially” restarted the self-made wardrobe project on Friday! Whee!!
I’m excited, but mostly I’m trying not to be too concerned that August isn’t that far away from fall, and the weather turning cold (hence the sweater.)

I’m looking for yarn storage ideas. How do you store yarn?

yarn storage 1

So, part of dealing with bedbugs is having to wash/dry all your clothes & linens (and in my case yarn, fabric, and fiber) on hot, before sealing them all away in plastic bags.

The heat kills any bugs that might be living in the fabrics, and once they’re washed you seal them away so they can’t get reinfected before the apartment is treated.

In the endless cleaning and packing, I’ve realized a couple things,

: You can fit an amazing amount of crap in an apartment.

: I have a lot of shoes. And shoes are very hard to pack.

: This whole thing is a giant pain in the ass.

: And it gives me the chance to reorganize my yarn & fabric.

All my yarn and fabric used to live in bins under my bed, but that wasn’t very accessible. Plus now the idea of storing things under my bed creeps me out a bit.

Of course since this is an apartment, with somewhat limited storage, I just might end up going back to bins under the bed, with everything individually ziplocked.

But I wanted to ask, how do you store your yarn?

Maybe you have a system I can draw some much needed inspiration from.

So, how do you store your yarn?
