It’s the halfway point! – The Self-Made Wardrobe Week 26

The Self-Made Wardrobe is a project where I only wear garments I’ve made.
It’s sort of a year long experiment in getting dressed without clothing labels.

Day-176

DAY 176 – JANUARY 23rd

The First of Many Archer Button Up Shirts
Black Tank Top
Birds & Wheels Flare Skirt
Black Tights
Bead Crochet Bracelet
Various Rings

This week marks the halfway point of the project! Yay!!!!

I’m thinking now that I’m halfway into this self-made wardrobe year, maybe I should finally come up with some sort of plan for building my wardrobe.

But then again, I’ve mostly been winging it so far – and for the most part that has worked out (minus the lack of pants…) – so maybe I’ll just keep winging it for the next 26 weeks.

To plan, or not to plan? That is the question (at least for the moment.)

Day-177

DAY 177 – JANUARY 24th

Moonstruck Cardigan
The First of Many Archer Button Up Shirts
Black Tank Top
Graphic Silk Circle Skirt
Black Tights
Brown Boots
Various Rings

Continuing along “to plan, or not to plan” this week got properly cold & snowy, and I’m realizing that I don’t have a great number of layering pieces. Most of my sweaters work better on their own (instead of over or under other pieces), which is kind of annoying because it is making layering tricky. So, I want to keep this in mind for the next couple sweaters.

Day-178

DAY 178 – JANUARY 25th

Not-So-Straightforward Basic Purple Sweater
Black Tank Top
Black Maxi Skirt with a Slit
Black Tights
Brown Boots
Robot Necklace
Various Rings

Of course, the not-so-straightforward basic purple sweater being the exception to my lack of layer-able sweaters.

And yet.

I still prefer wearing this sweater on it’s own. So maybe the issue has less to do with my sweaters not being good for layering, and more to do with me disliking layering sweaters…

Day-179

DAY 179 – JANUARY 26th

Deconstructed Black Sweater
Boring Black Sweater
Black Tank Top
Pirate Skirt
Black Tights
Black Knee High Boots
Long Necklace
Various Rings

Because what else would you wear in a snowstorm/blizzard/thing?

To be fair I am wearing 2 pairs of tights (one of which is wool), plus added 2 scarves, mittens and a my giant alpaca coat on top of it all (with a hat in my bag).

So I was plenty warm, and this skirt does look pretty good (if entirely unpractical) blowing around in a snowstorm.

Day-180

DAY 180 – JANUARY 27th

Hand-knit Sweater Dress
Black Tank Top
Black Tights
Various Rings

And then the next day (Tuesday) I hid inside all day, with lots of tea & knitting.

Day-181

DAY 181 – JANUARY 28th

Deconstructed Black Sweater
Not-So-Straightforward Basic Purple Sweater
Black Tank Top
Graphic Silk Circle Skirt
Black Leggings
Brown Boots
Various Rings

The best sweater I have for layering on top of other sweaters is this deconstructed, sewn, sweater – maybe my wardrobe plan should include another one or two sewn sweaters – because (unlike in knitting) sewing over-sized sweaters isn’t actually that much more work than sewing close fitting sweaters.

Day-182

DAY 182 – JANUARY 29th

The First of Many Archer Button Up Shirt
Black Scarf
Black Tank Top
Black Maxi Skirt with a Slit
Black Tights
Brown Boots
Various Rings

This is actually not what I ended up wearing yesterday. After I took this photo (which I always try and do right before I leave the apartment) I changed into my Versio Sweater, and wore that instead, since I was already running a little late I didn’t have time to take a new photo. Oops.

knitting, beading & jeans making

Each Wednesday, I post little snippets about what’s happening, and what I’m working on.

handspun sweater

I finished off the neckline of my entirely handspun & handknit sweater. I had originally done an i-cord bind off, but that was rolling unattractively, so it took it out, and worked 3 rounds of seed stitch on a smaller needle, then bound off, and it looks much better.

bead crochet

I learned to bead crochet at VKLive this weekend and might have gotten a little bit obsessed. VKLive was a blast – thank you so much to those of you who stopped to say hi. I didn’t take many photos, and (following my Rhinebeck trend) didn’t buy much. I bought the beads that you see in the photo, and a gleener, but that’s it.

jean making begins again

And I restarted the jeans making experiment. Way back at the very beginning of the self-made wardrobe I experimented a bit with making jeans, enough experimentation to get a mockup that was “ok” but needed some fit adjustments. I put them down to work on sweaters and other cold weather things, and completely forgot what I was going to do to them, so I started again from scratch. Fingers crossed this experiment goes better.

A week of freezing temperatures and cozy sweaters – The Self-Made Wardrobe Week 23

The Self-Made Wardrobe is a project where I only wear garments I’ve made.
It’s sort of a year long experiment in getting dressed without clothing labels.

Day-155

DAY 155 – JANUARY 2nd

Deconstructed Black Sweater
Black Tank Top
Graphic Silk Circle Skirt
Black Tights
Brown Boots
Various Rings

I still can’t get over how cozy this deconstructed sewn together sweater is, especially while the wind is whipping around, and everyone is bundled it. This super cold weather is definitely making me want to sew another sweater.

Day-156

DAY 156 – JANUARY 3rd

Blue & Green Archer Button Up Shirt
Black Tank Top
Black Scarf
Black Maxi Skirt w/ a Slit
Black Leggings
Various Rings

It’s cold enough outside that even days spent inside in front of the computer call for giant scarves and fuzzy leggings.

Day-157

DAY 157 – JANUARY 4th

Hand Knit Sweater Dress
Black Scarf
Black Leggings
Various Rings

My absolute favorite type of scarf is a properly gigantic scarf made out of a thin material. I love my scarfs crazy long and super wide – even though it means you can’t really see the dress in this photo… (You can get a better look here.)

Day-158

DAY 158 – JANUARY 5th

Not-So-Straightforward Basic Purple Sweater
Black Tank Top
Black Maxi Skirt with a Slit
Brown Boots
Long Necklace
Various Rings

I finished my purple sweater! I love it! It’s exactly what I wanted it to be – even though the process of knitting it was a rather windy process.

Also! I finished it, and it only took me a couple days to write a post about it (as opposed to the weeks it normally takes…)

Day-159

DAY 159 – JANUARY 6th

Blue & Green Archer Button Up Shirt
Black Tank Top
Pirate Skirt
Black Tights
Brown Boots
Bicycle Clock Necklace

My first Archer button up shirt is finally finished! Even though I’ve been wearing it for weeks, I only got around to adding buttons & button holes a couple days ago. But it’s done! Well and truly done – expect a finished object post soon.

Day-160

DAY 160 – JANUARY 7th

Deconstructed Black Sweater
Not-So-Straightforward Basic Purple Sweater
Black Tank Top
Graphic Circle Skirt
Black Tights
Brown Boots
Long Necklace
Various Rings

The goal of my purple sweater when I was designing it, was to create a sweater that was warm enough to wear on it’s own, and thin enough to wear under another layer. And it totally meets that goal! I held two strands of lace weight yarn together, so the fabric is thin and drapey, and warm, plus it didn’t take forever and a half to knit.

Day-161

DAY 161 – JANUARY 8th

Boring Black Sweater
Black Tank Top
Cascading Flowers Skirt
Various Rings

I learned many lessons for my No-So-Straightforward Basic Purple Sweater from my Boring Black Sweater, which I knit using one strand of lace weight, and took forever to knit, and which ended up with too short sleeves.
