Welcome! I'm Holly Chayes.

This online space has been around in one form or another since 2010, it focuses on making, creativity and living a curious life, plus a lot of clothing.

Some of the projects I've worked on in the past 10+ years include...

Talking About Clothes with Holly Chayes

An interview podcast that's all about clothing (and also, not *really* about clothing at all). Find all the details and listen to conversations about comfort, style, change and shopping here. Or search for Talking About Clothes with Holly Chayes wherever you listen to podcasts.

Who Wears Who?

A personal style coaching and content practice devoted to helping you own and wear your clothes intentionally, instead of being worn by them. Discover your own style guidance, and learn more about the practice of intentional style at WhoWearsWho.com

The Self-Made Wardrobe Project

Predecessor to Who Wears Who, a year-long challenge in 2014/2015 where I only wore clothes I made. That year would have been a lot easier if the clothes had magically made themselves. Learn more about The Self-Made Wardrobe Project and explore the archives here.

The Shawl Geometry Book Series

Enough shawl shapes to keep you knitting for a lifetime. A multi-year exploration of math, shape and space in knitting, where I documented traditional shawl shaping, and iterated on those traditions to create new recipes of shawl shaping. Ultimately this lead to 75+ shapes, and 400+ pages of common and uncommon shawl shaping instructions. This project was inspired by a dozen individual shawl designs, each encapsulating a love of geometric lace design. You can find The Shawl Geometry Series here.

keeping this short and sweet

Each Wednesday, I post a snapshot of the projects I’m working on, and where my brain is at. The green Shawl Geometry shawl shape swatches got photographed just in time for me to dump all the photos onto my laptop, wrap up a couple projects, throw some clothes in a bag, and head off to the airport to fly up to Maine for a couple days with family, which have been fantastic. There’s been boating, and paddle boarding, and yoga by the ocean. Lots of dogs, reading, sunshine, food, puzzles, and as little time in front of the computer as possible. I’m here for another day and a bit, so I’m keeping this short and going to wrap up a couple more work things this morning before we head out on another boat trip. No related posts.

Two very old projects make an unexpected re-appearance

Each Wednesday, I post a snapshot of the projects I’m working on, and where my brain is at. They’re back… If you’ve been following along for awhile, you’ll know these sorts of lime green swatches very well. Very, very well. They’re the style of swatches in the updated Shawl Geometry books and there have been a TON of them on the blog over the last year or so. And each time I finish a batch, I think it’ll be the last, but then it’s not. So, I’m not going to say this is the last of them – but I very much hope it is, and it kind of needs to be. I’m shooting the final photos for book three on Friday, before I head to Maine for a couple days, and then this project goes to the technical editor at the end of the month, so there’s really no...

writing, editing, weaving, and a skirt fit for a pirate queen

Each Wednesday, I post a snapshot of the projects I’m working on, and where my brain is at. After the last round of Shawl Geometry Book Three edits took an age and a half, typing up all the edits seemed to simply fly by. I’m reading through the whole thing now (not in one sitting, that was a nice fantasy!) and I’m slightly shocked but thoroughly grateful that the whole thing doesn’t suck! I’ve trusted through the whole editing process that the final thing would be excellent (otherwise I would have stopped!) but it’s really nice to get some perspective, and have that trust confirmed in the read through!! Next steps are notes, and edits, and then to the technical editor. I’m still weaving piles upon piles of squares on the zoom loom, still haven’t set the handspun yarn I finished last week, and am contemplating a next spinning project....
