The Self-Made Wardrobe Week 10
The Self-Made Wardrobe is a project where I only wear garments I’ve made, for one year.
You can read more about the project, and catch up on past posts, here.
Week 10 is finished! And I’m trying something a little bit different with the post this week. So leave a comment, and let me know what you think.
Day 64 – 10/3: black tank, black maxi, blue kimono, bead crochet necklace, black flats, various rings
Day 65 – 10/4: black tank, black & white 2 layer circle skirt, white maxi pinned up (new!), blue kimono, my default long necklace, sneakers, various rings
Day 66 – 10/5: black tank, cascading flowers skirt, blue kimono, black flats, default long necklace, various rings
Day 67 – 10/6: black tank, gingham skirt, jersey vest, brown boots, little princess necklace, various rings
Day 68 – 10/7: black tank, black maxi, blue kimono, black flats, default long necklace, various rings
Day 69 – 10/8: hand-knit brown/pink/green dress, white maxi, mustard wedges, tiny elephant necklace, various rings
Day 70 – 10/9: black tank, Versio pullover, black & white 2 layer circle skirt, sneakers, bicycle necklace
My blue kimono is kind of completely perfect for this sort of in between weather – most days it wasn’t cold enough for a full sweater, but not warm enough for just a tank top.
I’ve been wanting another full maxi skirt for awhile now – so Saturday morning I pulled this ancient white fabric out from my fabric stash, and made a white maxi length skirt in the same style as my cascading flowers skirt (the one I wore practically every other day throughout August). This new skirt is light and airy (though somewhat sheer), so it makes a fantastic underskirt – which is excellent because that’s what I want it to be.
The pink/brown/green knitted dress is one of the first things I made for the first iteration of this project (way back in May…). I haven’t worn it before, because I was planning on over dyeing it. That obviously hasn’t happened, and the colors are starting to grow on me. They’re interesting, if nothing else.
And my Versio sweater is done! Done. Done. Done. It’s lovely. It’s warm. More pictures, thoughts, and a full post forthcoming.

What do you think about this post format?
I think it helps highlight the clothes – and it keeps me from talking incessantly about the weather – but I’d love to know your opinion.

shawls, sweaters, sewing, yarn, and a new pop up yarn shop
Each Wednesday I post little snippets about the projects I’m working on.
You can see all of the Wednesday posts here.
I bound off my shawl! Knit out of Julie Asselin’s Merletto and of my own design, I can’t wait to block it and see how it turned out!
First I need this sweater to dry.
I’m so accustomed to knitting & blocking lace shawls (which can dry in a couple hours) that the day or two sweaters require to dry feels like an eternity.
I took a break from my frantic sweater knitting to do a little bit of sewing…
In my brain I know that sewing is faster than knitting – a lot faster – but every time I’m away from the sewing machine for more than a week or so, I sort of forget how much faster it really is.
Mostly though, it’s been sweater knitting all the way.
My boring black sweater is nearing being finished. I started the first sleeve yesterday – and thanks to a long evening of knitting & drinking with friends it’s to the elbow.
Got to love a good distraction for many hours of knitting stockinette.
Last weekend I went to the opening party of a new pop up yarn shop in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. Gauge + Tension is run by two friends of mine, Michele and Melissa. G+T specializes in high end, hard to find yarns – and it does not disappoint!
I was restrained and picked up one skein of Western Sky Knits – superwash merino lace weight, in the colorway “elephant.” It’s a really beautiful irresistible purple-grey-y color.
They also carry, Julie Asselin, Brooklyn Tweed, Quince & Co. Jones & Vandermeer, Sleep Season, Hedgehog, and Tanis Fiber Arts. You can see all of their yarns and fibers here.
If you’re around for the NYC Yarn Crawl this coming weekend, Kristin of “Voolenvine” is going to set up shop at Gauge + Tension.
If you’re in or around NYC, be sure to check them out!
G+T’s address, days & store hours can be found here, on their website.
And my G+T project bag is already hard at work protecting my boring black sweater from harm – not that you’d be able to see a stain on this sweater…
Getting Your Wardrobe Ready for Fall and Looking Forward to Winter
Fall is very firmly here, so I have sweaters, sewing, autumn, and upcoming winter, on the brain. I’m certainly not the only one.
Andi at Untangling-Knots, asked her readers to show off their favorite fall sweaters, and the response was some seriously beautiful sweaters.
Faith at Faithfully Geeky, listed her criteria for her ideal fall sweater – including “was it enjoyable to knit” – which made me think some more about the gap that sometimes appears between what we like to make, and what we like to wear.
Caroline at Sew Caroline, gathered up some fall sewing inspiration.
Including this coat from Vogue (#V8930), which looks amazingly cozy, and simple to sew. And the Cascade Skirt from Megan Nielsen, in my opinion you can never have too many long flowing skirts… luckily, pairing boots & tights with your skirts is an easy fall update.
Kate at Design Diary, has some interesting thoughts on dressing for fall, even while the temperatures remain warm.
Elise Blaha, is doing an autumn capsule wardrobe project/challenge for the next three months, that I can’t wait to follow along with. (If you don’t know, a capsule wardrobe is, it’s a very small wardrobe, made up of very versatile pieces – Unfancy has a great page explaining capsule wardrobes here.)
Mandy at The Wardrobe Project, is planning her fall sewing, and is working on garments that will get worn all year around. I love that!
Heather at Closet Case Files, has an excellent round up of easy to knit fall sweaters, and it’s making me want to knit Beaubourg by Julie Hoover.
And Into-Mind has an amazing list of resources for updating your fall wardrobe.
Now if you’ll excuse me I’m going to go bury myself back under my pile of half finished sweaters…
…and stock up on tights…
…and try not to panic that winter is coming…
🙂
