this week was a week full of sweaters

It’s a week of sweaters…
I finally washed and blocked one of the first garments I made for the self-made wardrobe project. I kept putting it off, and putting it off, because I thought I was going to over-dye it, but the somewhat strange pooling is growing on me.
My boring black sweater is done!!!
Done. Blocked. Worn. Yay!
It might have been a nightmare to knit – but I absolutely love it.
And I have finished photos of the Versio Sweater to show you tomorrow!
I still have my transitional sweater, my jade sweater, my inherited sweater, and my sweater jacket to finish – but I’m feeling a little bit better about fall & winter.

I bound off my shawl! Knit out of Julie Asselin’s Merletto and of my own design, I can’t wait to block it and see how it turned out!
First I need this sweater to dry.
I’m so accustomed to knitting & blocking lace shawls (which can dry in a couple hours) that the day or two sweaters require to dry feels like an eternity.
I took a break from my frantic sweater knitting to do a little bit of sewing…
In my brain I know that sewing is faster than knitting – a lot faster – but every time I’m away from the sewing machine for more than a week or so, I sort of forget how much faster it really is.
Mostly though, it’s been sweater knitting all the way.
My boring black sweater is nearing being finished. I started the first sleeve yesterday – and thanks to a long evening of knitting & drinking with friends it’s to the elbow.
Got to love a good distraction for many hours of knitting stockinette.
Last weekend I went to the opening party of a new pop up yarn shop in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. Gauge + Tension is run by two friends of mine, Michele and Melissa. G+T specializes in high end, hard to find yarns – and it does not disappoint!
I was restrained and picked up one skein of Western Sky Knits – superwash merino lace weight, in the colorway “elephant.” It’s a really beautiful irresistible purple-grey-y color.
They also carry, Julie Asselin, Brooklyn Tweed, Quince & Co. Jones & Vandermeer, Sleep Season, Hedgehog, and Tanis Fiber Arts. You can see all of their yarns and fibers here.

The Self-Made Wardrobe Week 9 – Welcome to October!
The Self-Made Wardrobe is a project where I only wear garments I’ve made, for one year.

It’s the end of week 9, and the second month of this project!

It’s getting a little chilly here…
I pulled out tights for the first time yesterday, and was cursing them throughout the day, but was very glad I had them when I was coming home last night.
We’re having typical New York fall weather, where you’re screwed no matter what you wear. What’s perfect for during the day isn’t enough once the sun goes down, and what’s perfect for mornings & evenings sucks throughout the day. And it feels like no matter what you wear, you’re stuck carrying layers around.
All that to say, I’m knitting like the wind.
The boring black sweater feels like the sweater that will never end – sometimes having a long torso really sucks – but it is moving along. I would say I’m a little over halfway done with the body.
I’m hoping to block my transitional sweater tonight, and install the zipper this weekend, because this really is the perfect weather for that sweater. The only thing holding it up at the moment is weaving in all the ends, but I’ll suck it up and push through them, because I want the sweater.
(Side thought: that’s one really good thing about shawls, you generally only have two – maybe four – ends to weave in when all is said and done.)
