The Self-Made Wardrobe Project Week 7

The-Self-Made-Wardrobe-Week-7

It’s the end of week 7, I’m writing this on Day 50, of the Self-Made Wardrobe project, and like last week, I just want some damn pants.

I’ve had a weird neck crick much of the week (probably from sleeping funny) so I haven’t gotten a whole lot of knitting or sewing done. However I did get the hardware (button, rivets, zip, etc.) I need. And I ripped open some of the seams of my experimental shorts, so I can futz with the fit, and then fix the pattern.

I also finished the knitting on my Versio sweater, and started working on an old unfinished sweater from years ago. But other than that things have been pretty quiet on garment making front.

I wonder if I could finish knitting two sweaters this week.

Each Wednesday I post little snippets about the projects I’m working on.
You can see all of the Wednesday posts here.

colorful knitting

I finished the hood of my Versio sweater! That’s a close up of the three needle bind off. I just need to weave in all the ends, make some cording, and block it before it’s wearable.

knitting

My lace shawl knit out of Julie Asselin’s lovely “Merletto” is sailing along with a little help from rewatching Downton Abbey.

It’s definitely fall here. Crisp and cool, and desperately making me want a pair of jeans, and a pile of sweaters.

ends to weave in

So, I picked up and started knitting an ancient unfinished sweater (from my pile of many). It got a hood, and an amazing number of ends, added to it this week.

ribbed knitting

Then I ripped out the bind off at the bottom hem, so I could add ribbing.

I’m adding a 4 x 1 ribbing, by dropping down the stitch that I want to make a purl stitch, and then picking it back up with a crochet hook. It’s not fast, but it’s faster than reknitting half a sweater.

It needs sleeves, a zipper, ends woven in, and a washing before it’s done.

Soon, hopefully. I wonder if I could finish knitting two sweaters this week…

some thoughts on selfies and self portraits

mirror reflection photo

People have been turning the camera on themselves since the 1800s (Robert Cornelius took possibly the first photographic self-portrait in 1838).
And before that, there were self portraits made of charcoal and oil paints.

Selfies and self portraits certainly aren’t new.

I don’t know what the definitive difference between the two is.
(I don’t think anyone knows.)
And there’s certainly a lot of middle ground between, a selfie taken in the bathroom mirror, and a self portrait of/by Frida Kahlo.

But here are some off-the-cuff thoughts from someone who is
a) terrified to cameras & having her picture taken,
b) has taken a picture of herself every day for 45 days and plans to continue for another 320 days,
and c) still can’t decide if she’s taking selfies or self portraits.

Thought 1: A selfie says “look at me, look at what I’m doing/where I am/who I’m with.” A self portrait says “this is who I am.”

Thought 2: A selfie is a picture designed for other people to see. No one takes a selfie for themselves. A self portrait is you creating an image of yourself for yourself. The process of creating the image is part of the point.

Thought 3: A selfie tries to erase or minimize “flaws.” Some self portraits try to minimize or erase flaws, but some don’t, and some embrace them.

Thought 4: A selfie is disposable, it gains no depth from a second viewing. A self portrait (at least a good one) has layers that can be explored and uncovered, through multiple viewings.

Thought 5: You “take” selfies. You “create” self portraits.

But can a selfie become a self portrait?

And when is a self portrait really a selfie?
