some thoughts on 15 minute projects – The Self-Made Wardrobe Week 34

The Self-Made Wardrobe is a project where I only wear garments I’ve made.
It’s a year long experiment in getting dressed without clothing labels –
it’s a year about noticing patterns, trying things, and observing what happens.

Why is it, that small projects often take more time from start to finish than many larger projects do? Why does it sometimes take longer to put buttons on a shirt, than to complete a skirt (or a sweater, or all the previous steps of that shirt)? Why do we live with the little annoyances that could be solved with a super quick fix – missing buttons, straps to cut off, pants to hem?

Why is it so easy to procrastinate the 15 minute project, while diving head first into the 5 hour one?

Some thoughts on little projects this week – no answer required, just a question to ponder.

  1. That’s a very good question! I was thinking the same thing as I sewed the buttons on Archer last night. The stupid shirt has been finished for like 2 months! You would think I would be really excited to get it done and be able to add one more handmade piece to my wardrobe. But no, it never seems to work that way.

I think for me, it has to do with momentum. Once I’ve lost momentum on a project (or there is some question in regards to deciding the next step or a change I might like to make) it just stops me in my tracks. I think with Archer, it was the front pockets. I wasn’t a fan with how they looked on me. So last night I finally ripped them off and now it’s finished.

Love these thoughts Melissa!! Momentum certainly plays a part for me too.

And a bit huge congratulations on finishing-finishing your Archer!!!!!!
