I certainly don’t have the most conventional wardrobe – The Self-Made Wardrobe Week 40

The Self-Made Wardrobe is a project where I only wear garments I’ve made.
It’s a year long experiment in getting dressed without clothing labels –
it’s a year about noticing patterns, trying things, and observing what happens.

Hello Week 40.
I can’t quite believe we’ve been doing this for 40 weeks…
I’m beginning to be able to see the end of the montage
(at least this particular montage).

I was thinking about this the other day and realizing that much my wardrobe falls into a handful of categories:

The pieces I hated making, and love wearing.
Like my boring black sweater.

The pieces I liked making, and love wearing.
Most of my sweaters and skirts fall into this category.

The pieces I enjoyed making, didn’t think I was going to like wearing, but really like wearing.
Like my Versio sweater, and my sweater dress.

The pieces that had (what felt like) a million and a half stops & starts.
Both Archer button up shirts, and my jeans.

The pieces that took 30 seconds (at least it felt that way) to make.
My deconstructed sweater, my black & white vine print skirt.

Jean substitutes. (the skirts that substituted for jeans and are taking a well deserved break now that I have jeans.)
My black maxi skirt, and graphic silk circle skirt.

Clothing patterns I need a million more of (aka “Wardrobe Staples”)
Archers, silk circle skirts, easy maxi skirts, jeans, black tank tops.

They’re not the most conventional categories – but then again, why make your own clothing if you’re looking for conventionality.

This week involved a quick overnight trip to visit family – hence the furry guest. Of course, with this project, traveling involves bringing along, or creating a new photo set up, which can be a little tricky.

After 266 days of photos, I have my photo set up down, I can set up the tripod, get out the camera, take a bunch of photos, break it all down, and walk out the door in under 5 minutes.

Traveling is a different story – involving a little more forethought, and time.

So.

Keeping up with a daily self-portrait challenge & traveling – 3 things to keep in mind.

Firstly, camera. I travel with my camera & remote (the remote being my phone), but in a pinch a phone & timer would do.

Secondly, to bring the tripod or no? My tripod is light enough that I could travel with it, but it would be kind of annoying. My father has one, so I borrowed his. The backup plan, was to balance my camera on top of a mantel, or a car, or maybe the piano.

Thirdly, allow extra time. Between finding good light, fighting with the tripod, and standing rather than sitting (meaning I needed to figure out what to do with my legs), the whole thing probably took about 20 minutes. Plus the 5 or so minutes the dog cooperated – as opposed to the usual 5 minutes.

I’m pretty glad to be back to my 5 minute set up.
