The Self-Made Wardrobe Week 3
The Self-Made Wardrobe is a project where I only wear garments I’ve made, for one year.
You can read more about the project here.
It’s the end of Week 3 of the Self-Made Wardrobe Project, and almost the end of August (which means it’s almost fall – eep!)
Luckily the weather is still warm, but a couple chilly mornings have definitely turbo fueled my sweater knitting. (The body of my sweater is done – yay!)
And I’m starting to think ahead towards cushy cozy sweaters, skirts with tights, and my fall through winter staple – jeans…
My current plan is to finish the sweater I’m working on, whip out some more tank tops, maybe make another skirt or two, and then turn my attention to making some jeans. That way I can focus on making jeans, without worrying about having nothing to wear.
Yesterday, I whipped up the world’s simplest cardigan, and a no sew jersey dress, that I can’t wait to wear and show off.
Unfortunately I’m still trying to work out how to get good, clear, interesting, photos of the garments themselves. I have worked out how to take some horrendous photos, but good ones are proving trickier.
Since a pile of books will only take you so far, and taking photos of yourself isn’t the easiest thing, I suspect I’m going to need a proper tripod for this. I am working on it…

The Self-Made Wardrobe Week 2
The Self-Made Wardrobe is a project where I only wear garments I’ve made, for one year.
You can read more about the project here.
And see past updates here.
I’m trying a different room plus a different photo set up, and liking the results much better than last week’s.
Unfortunately this specific set up means I can’t take photos of myself standing up, but it’s easy to use, fast to set up, and something I can live with.
I’m going to get a reflector so I can look to my left without my whole face being in shadow, but other than that I’m more or less happy.
That being said, you can’t see the clothes to their best advantage, so I’ll be taking photos where you can see the garments and posting those separately.
I’m also working away furiously on the sweater I posted about Tuesday, which is a very, very good thing. The mornings here are starting to get a little crisp. I’m also going to try to pick up fabric for some over-shirts and maybe a jacket soon.
I posted a list of the basic categories all of my clothing fit into yesterday, and since I’m ok on skirts (at least for awhile) I’m going to try and shift my focus to cranking out some more tank tops (since I now have a basic tank pattern that I love), and sewing up some over-shirts & jackets.
And as always, if you want to follow the project you can get the blog posts sent to your inbox by signing up for my newsletter here.
The Versio Sweater – beginnings
I’m not a sweater knitter. I’m a shawl knitter.
I was a sock knitter for awhile.
I’ve knit some mittens. And some hats.
I knit a bag once. And a blanket.
Some stuffed animals. And a pair of slippers.
But I don’t really knit sweaters.
I’ve finished a total of 5.
I felted one.
And one needs a dropped stitch tacked down.
And one I might over dye.
So I have 3 that are wearable (one of which has a date with the dye pot.)
And one that has about 10 minutes of work on it.
But I started another one last week.
Which brings me up to 5 sweaters on the needles.
(I’m not quite sure how that happened…)
The pattern is Versio by Ankestrick (here it is on Ravelry.) It’s a top down pullover, with continuous set in long sleeves (which are kind of totally brilliant!), and I’ll be adding the hood that Rililie on Ravelry wrote out.
I chose it to fill the role of a sweatshirt in my self-made wardrobe. I wanted something light but warm, that would be easy to wear, but not boring to knit.
I’m holding two strands of lace weight yarn together (the pattern calls for one strand of lace weight) on a size US 8 (5.0 mm) needle.
I’m using 1 skein of Julie Asselin’s “Merletto,” 1 skein of Sweet Georgia’s “Merino Silk Lace,” 1 skein of Fiberspates’ “Scrumptious,” and 1 skein of Cascade’s “Forest Hills.”
I’m hoping most of 1 skein of each will be a enough. Everything (except the Cascade), is from some swatching I was doing for my LYS, so I have one almost full skein of each.
I’m beginning to have my doubts that this will be enough yarn on it’s own. If it’s not, I’m planning on doing the lower portions of the body and sleeve in the solid black Cascade.
I’m at the waist now and zooming towards the hem, while still trying to work out how I ended up with *5* sweaters on my needles…
(please tell me I’m not the only one who finds it amusing that I have the same number of sweater WIPs as I do FOs.)
